The Capacity, Knowledge and Learning Action Plan is one of the main outputs of the Task Force on Best Practices led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and established to undertake system-wide capacity-development efforts to support the implementation of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030. It emphasizes the need to mainstream restoration knowledge in education and natural resource management programmes at all levels, including by instructing and empowering current and future generations of professionals, educators, policymakers, private-sector leaders, implementers, practitioners, researchers, youth leaders, community leaders and volunteers. It also highlights the importance of learning and sharing knowledge developed by Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and recognizes their contributions to current restoration efforts around the world.

This action plan identifies the gaps where knowledge products or capacity-development initiatives are needed across various stakeholder groups, based on the results from a global capacity needs assessment, a stocktaking of capacity-development initiatives and knowledge products, and several targeted consultations. It describes existing knowledge products and capacity-development initiatives that can be replicated or extended to address these gaps. Based on these efforts, the action plan specifies the terms of reference for eight key capacity- and knowledge-development initiatives based on a set of recommended priority actions.

Why do we need a new vision for earth?

In the aftermath of the GLF Nairobi 2023 Hybrid Conference, we aimed at disseminating A New Vision for Earth. The campaign focuses on rallying diverse and influential voices to endorse 6 global demands targeted at key players during COP28, including the international community, policymakers, public and private financiers, and the private sector.

The overarching goal is to shape discussions and perceptions within and beyond COP28, ensuring the inclusion of scientific priorities, insights from leading experts, and the perspectives of the most affected people and landscapes/seascapes. The demands align with the key outcomes of the GLF Nairobi Conference, centered around the core GLF themes of rights, food and livelihoods, landscape restoration, financing sustainable landscapes, and measuring progress.

6 global demands targeted at key players during COP28

We urgently need a New Vision for Earth. We ask the international community, policymakers, public and private financing, and the private sector to adopt these 6 global actions backed by knowledge and the latest research.

These include addressing the climate crisis, emphasizing collaborative food sovereignty, transforming financial models for inclusivity, and prioritizing a well-being economy within planetary boundaries. Democratizing knowledge creation and advocating for rights underscore the comprehensive framework for a resilient, inclusive, and eco-conscious global community:

  1. Restore Landscapes and Seascapes: Redesign global food systems for resilience and unite for diverse, sovereign food production.
  2. Unite For Food and Seed Sovereignty: Advocate coherent policies and subsidy redirection and scale regenerative agriculture for soil health.
  3. Transform Financial Models: Adopt transparent models, redirecting capital sustainably.
  4. Build A Well-Being Economy: Phase out fossil fuels, advocate well-being beyond GDP.
  5. Democratize Knowledge Creation and Access: Promote free access, integrate diverse voices.
  6. Advocate For Rights in Decision Making: Ensure fair access to resources, uphold Indigenous rights.

About this session

There’s no question there’s a global appetite for wild meat. But how can we strike a balance between conservation and the well-being of local populations?  This session aims to share knowledge, discuss challenges and strengthen international collaborations to address the complex issues surrounding bushmeat consumption.

Speakers introduced the WILDMEAT Database and the FORET Project, which aim to inform policy decisions and protect biodiversity while supporting local communities. The Sustainable Wildlife Management Project investigates sustainable wildlife consumption and community-based resource management. The goal is to find answers for sustainable wildlife management and the development of alternative livelihoods in various regions.

Non-profit organizations play a vital role in restoration efforts

This report, commissioned by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in support of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, assesses funding sources for local non-profit organizations engaged in ecosystem restoration in Central America and Africa. Ecosystem restoration is crucial for addressing climate and biodiversity issues and can generate substantial economic and environmental benefits.

Local non-profit organizations play a vital role in restoration efforts, given their knowledge of local needs and solutions. However, they face challenges accessing funding due to limited options and mismatches in project sizes and funders’ expectations. Three key actors in restoration funding are public funders, private investors, and civil society organizations.

Key Recommendations for non-profits, funders, and development partners

For non-profit implementers, common funding options are grants and public sector policies like subsidies. The report outlines 14 relevant funding options, including target groups, geographic scope, thematic areas, and eligibility criteria. Intermediaries, such as national environmental funds, can help connect local implementers with funding sources:

  • Familiarize with national restoration funding infrastructure.
  • Understand donor language, eligibility criteria, and application processes.
  • Partner with international NGOs, UN Agencies, and development partners.
  • Explore results-based finance instruments for long-term funding.
  • Utilize matchmaking platforms to navigate the funding landscape.
  • Develop the capacity of national environmental funds in Central America and Africa.
  • Foster knowledge exchange and networks among local implementers for funding accessibility.
  • Build an economic case for ecosystem restoration through valuation assessments.
  • Expand small-grants programs for local non-profits.
  • Diversify funding streams for long-term sustainability.

Strengthening sustainable finance skills

This report presents the analysis conducted in the first half of 2023 by the LSFI Working Group on Sustainable Finance Education and Training

The working group had as an objective to analyse and strengthen the sustainable finance skills and competencies of Luxembourg’s financial centre. The analysis maps and identifies gaps and needs and proposes practical solutions to develop suitable sustainable finance-related education paths/training in Luxembourg.

The report exposes the working group’s objective, the methodology and scope used for the analysis, the main findings, the solutions identified and the following steps to be carried out by the LSFI.

About the LSFI Working Group on Sustainable Finance Training and Education

During its first years of activity, the LSFI conducted a thorough mapping exercise to identify the gaps and needs of the financial sector when it comes to sustainable finance. Following this exercise and in line with the Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Strategy Action Plan, the LSFI decided to organise cross-sectoral working groups to help address these gaps and advance sustainable finance.

The overall goal behind these working groups is to help the financial players in Luxembourg transition towards increased sustainability and to ensure coordination between the involved actors by regularly exchanging information, fostering dialogue, sharing best practices, and proposing practical solutions.
The first of these working groups started in November 2022 to cover sustainable finance training and education.
