In Kenya, approximately 12 million people live on degraded land and food productivity has fallen behind the rate of population growth. Mount Kenya is a biodiversity reservoir, an important agricultural area, and a national water tow-er—a source of water for the surrounding watershed. The landscape has been impacted by increasingly frequent climate events with direct consequences to agricultural production and food security, illegal deforestation, land degradation, and commodity markets, resulting in farmland extending up the fertile slopes of the mountain and encroaching into protected forests, further threatening the water supply. Existing initiatives are operating in silos, missing opportunities for exchanging learnings and building synergies to optimize resources and ensure the sustainability of efforts.
To mitigate these challenges, the Rainforest Alliance is advancing five strategic and interconnected interventions to deliver conservation and efficient management of resources and ecosystem services, along with improved rural livelihoods in a vibrant, more equitable rural economy. This initiative is generously being supported by the IKEA Foundation.

This annual progress report covers the period from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023, providing an update on the Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR) Impact Program’s progress and achievements.

The emphasis during this period included strengthening community to accelerate fruitful knowledge exchange across country projects and disseminate insights into how best to initiate private and public sector action on value chains.

FOLUR is a powerful game-changer in the global arena, encouraging transformative government policies and private sector practices to support environmental restoration. This effort is urgent as supply chain vulnerabilities to risks from climate change on agriculture grow in tandem with a growing demand for food under pressure of population growth.

What is Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and how can it help reduce fall armyworm

The Fall Armyworm (FAW) (Spodoptera frugiperda Smith) is a pest native to the Americas. This hungry caterpillar feeds on different plants but prefers maize. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a combination of strategies that focusses on reducing the environment’s suitability for FAW increase.

Agro-ecological approaches form the basis of IPM, creating unfavorable environmental conditions for FAW while promoting natural elements that regulate FAW populations. These tactics are designed to reduce the overall FAW populations and avoid outbreaks. IPM also involves scouting for pests so that farmers can make assessments of the need to take further action or not. If further action is deemed necessary, biological control or biological based pesticides (such as fungi or viruses that attack the pest) are preferred. Because of the risk they pose to natural enemies, and therefore future natural control of the pest, chemical pesticides are applied only as a last resort.

Agroecology is helping farmers manage fall armyworm

Agroecological approaches are nature-based control methods that promote cultivation of healthy plants, biodiversity of the agricultural environment, and what cultural responses to use when these fail.

This video explains how the harnessing of natural processes and minimizing reliance on synthetic chemical pesticides promotes beneficial organisms, such as natural enemies, helping farmers manage fall armyworm infestations while preserving the environment and supporting sustainable farming. This informational video is produced with the support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).

Fall armyworm a threat to food security

Fall armyworm (FAW), an agricultural pest native to the Americas, was first detected on the African continent in 2016 and has since spread across Africa and Asia. FAW feeds on over 350 plant species but prefers maize and other staples, and hence potentially threatens the incomes and food security of millions of smallholder farmers. However, CIFOR-ICRAF’s research shows that FAW impact is not as serious as was initially anticipated.

Unfortunately, in their haste to respond to FAW some governments have promoted indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides, which aside from putting human health and the environment at risk, kills natural enemies which feed on FAW. Moreover, many chemicals formulations are not very effective against FAW, because the pest has acquired resistance. Using chemical pesticides indiscriminately undermines Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies which depend to a large degree on natural enemies and are linked to a healthy biodiversity. CIFOR-ICRAF support IPM and agroecological practices, through our Transformative Partnership Platform on Agroecology.

The solution to fall armyworm

This video focuses on three basic pillars of agroecological approaches: (i) management of healthy plants; (ii) enhancing the biodiversity of the agricultural environment; and, (iii) what responses to use when these fail.

This informational video is produced with the support of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).

GLF Climate: Frontiers of Change

Hosted on the sidelines of COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and online, GLF Climate 2022: Frontiers of Changeunited 7,000 participants from 164 countries and rallied over 27 million people on social media around what humanity can still do to avoid the worsening impacts of the climate crisis.

Featuring 228 leading scientists, activists, Indigenous leaders, financiers, youth and government leaders, and 96 incredible partner organizations, the second edition of GLF Climate called for a just transition to a stewardship economy that puts people and nature first.

Launching the new TreesAdapt partnership platform

TreesAdapt is CIFOR-ICRAF’s response with partners to the huge demand for climate change adaptation. It aims to be a one-stop for solutions on how to leverage forests, trees, and agroforestry to adapt agriculture, land, and people and to support countries and actors in cross-sectoral implementation.

Forests and tree-based systems are key to food security for millions of smallholders. Trees make farming and food systems more resilient, limiting the impact of heat waves. Trees create better microclimates and help better manage water from plot to landscape, limiting the impact of flooding and erosion. Forests and trees can support the resilience of sectors like energy and water.
