A contribution to the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030

The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030 (hereafter “UN Decade”) aims to prevent, halt and reverse ecosystem degradation and recover biodiversity, and ecosystem integrity; enhance human health and well-being, including sustainable delivery of ecosystem goods and services; and mitigate climate change. To create a shared vision of ecosystem restoration, UN Decade partners, through a consultative process, launched ten principles for achieving the highest level of recovery possible through restoration projects.

To facilitate application of these principles and thereby maximize restoration outcomes for nature and people, the Standards of practice to guide ecosystem restoration provide key recommendations for all phases of restoration projects. These recommendations are applicable to the broad array of restorative activities included as ecosystem restoration under the UN Decade, across all types of ecosystems (urban, production, cultural, semi-natural and natural) and restoration projects, from voluntary community member-led efforts to highly resourced, nationally funded projects.

About GLF Nairobi 2023: ‘A new Vision for Earth’

The GLF Nairobi 2023 Hybrid Conference, held on October 11 and 12, convened global thought leaders to set the stage for COP28, the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference. This pivotal event mobilised action on critical issues affecting humanity, biodiversity, and our planet.

The conference featured two focused days: Day 1 centered on “Africa’s Sovereign Solutions,” exploring pathways to a sustainable and prosperous future for the continent. Day 2, dedicated to climate, aimed to craft a “Survival Guide for a Planet in Crisis,” paving the way for a fairer world ahead of COP28.

GLF Nairobi brought together a diverse coalition of influential voices, ranging from scientists, activists, and Indigenous leaders to financiers, women, youth, policymakers, and private sector representatives. As a united front, we collectively championed change and passionately advocated for meaningful action in these pivotal times.

Strengthening sustainable finance skills

This report presents the analysis conducted in the first half of 2023 by the LSFI Working Group on Sustainable Finance Education and Training

The working group had as an objective to analyse and strengthen the sustainable finance skills and competencies of Luxembourg’s financial centre. The analysis maps and identifies gaps and needs and proposes practical solutions to develop suitable sustainable finance-related education paths/training in Luxembourg.

The report exposes the working group’s objective, the methodology and scope used for the analysis, the main findings, the solutions identified and the following steps to be carried out by the LSFI.

About the LSFI Working Group on Sustainable Finance Training and Education

During its first years of activity, the LSFI conducted a thorough mapping exercise to identify the gaps and needs of the financial sector when it comes to sustainable finance. Following this exercise and in line with the Luxembourg Sustainable Finance Strategy Action Plan, the LSFI decided to organise cross-sectoral working groups to help address these gaps and advance sustainable finance.

The overall goal behind these working groups is to help the financial players in Luxembourg transition towards increased sustainability and to ensure coordination between the involved actors by regularly exchanging information, fostering dialogue, sharing best practices, and proposing practical solutions.
The first of these working groups started in November 2022 to cover sustainable finance training and education.

Mainstreaming finance for nature – from niche to norm

The Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) held its sixth Investment Case Symposium, GLF-Luxembourg Finance for Nature: What comes next?, on 7 March 2023 in Luxembourg and online.

It brought together over 4,500 finance stakeholders from across the globe; project developers, entrepreneurs, and fund managers; development finance institutions, impact investors, donors, and foundations; investors, funds, banks, and other financiers; and youth, local communities, and changemakers.

The symposium showcased existing and innovative financial mechanisms, investable community-led business models, and successful climate investments. It connected local project developers – especially in the Global South – with investors; highlighted how to catalyze private sector investment in community-led and nature-based projects; and identified policy recommendations for moving green finance from the margins to the mainstream.

The Outcome Statement summarizes policy recommendations on the symposium’s four key themes below and showcases projects and initiatives of each category.

  1. Blended finance
  2. Impact monitoring and standards
  3. Sustainable value chains
  4. Innovation for community finance

About the 6th Investment Case Symposium

Hosted in Luxembourg and online, the GLF–Luxembourg Finance for Nature 2023: What comes next? united 4,500 participants from 160 countries, 106 speakers, and 100 global and local partner organizations, and reached 10 million people on social media, with more than 230 thousand engagements, around how finance can solve – rather than exacerbate – the climate and biodiversity crises.

About this session

Many corporate and financial investors have adopted net-zero emission targets and biodiversity commitments. However, it remains difficult to ensure compliance in a robust and cost-effective manner, such as that agricultural loans do not contribute to deforestation, or to demonstrate that investments increase biodiversity. Impact investors are therefore increasingly demanding impact monitoring tools to ensure that investments generate no harm and provide restoration benefits in terms of enhanced resilience to climate change and biodiversity conservation.

Meet Patricia 👩🏿‍🌾

As a smallholder farmer in Rwanda, her entire livelihood derives from less than one acre of land, and she depends on rain-fed agriculture to feed her family. Intensifying climate change — which brings floods, drought, pests, and more — now regularly threatens her harvests, putting her family’s future in jeopardy.

Meanwhile, as the climate crisis takes center stage across the world, both demand and funding for climate solutions have grown. Carbon markets alone will be worth an estimated $50 billion by 2030.

This presents an exciting opportunity for farmers like Patricia — if we can make carbon markets more inclusive.

One Acre Fund is dedicated to bridging the gap between farmers — who are on the front lines of climate change — and climate financing. One Acre Fund is now launching a portfolio of inclusive carbon projects that will improve farm livelihoods while driving environmental outcomes, sustainably and at scale.

The purpose and scope of this document

Acorn aims to give smallholder farmers cost-efficient access to international carbon markets and enable them to transition to agroforestry at scale. To do this, Acorn has laid out a robust Framework that ensures a scalable and accessible approach to carbon certification, which is complemented by the Methodology.

By publishing this Framework for agroforestry projects at the smallholder level, Acorn aims to stimulate substantive dialogue and knowledge exchange toward a highly trustworthy and more accessible carbon removal market. Acorn also hopes to contribute to accelerating the development of market standards that incorporate cutting-edge technology solutions for measurement accuracy – building a carbon removal market that is consistent and recognizable for all stakeholders.
