The book Tree Commodities and Resilient Green Economies in Africa is about tree crop commodities in Africa and it sought to examine how best Tree commodities can contribute to achieving sustainable development goals in Africa.

It is premised on the fact that tree commodities (such as coffee, cocoa, cashew, oil palm, rubber etc.) represent some of the continent’s fastest-growing land uses. These commodities support the livelihoods of millions of people and constitute an essential part of African economies. At least five countries in Africa are single tree commodity-dependent economies; seven more economies can be considered tree commodity-dependent when more than one tree commodity is considered.

But tree commodity farmers remain poor because prices remain low, and most crops are exported as raw materials or with little processing. As such, African countries capture very little of the total value of the commodity value chains. For example, the continent produces 75% of the world’s cocoa, but captures less than 10% of the commodity’s total market value. Fluctuating prices pose serious balance of payment challenges for economies, too.

About the 6th Investment Case Symposium

Hosted in Luxembourg and online, GLF–Luxembourg Finance for Nature 2023: What comes next? united 4,500 participants from 160 countries, 106 speakers, and 100 global and local partner organizations, and reached 10 million people on social media, with more than 230 thousand engagements, around how finance can solve – rather than exacerbate – the climate and biodiversity crises.

Across 37 plenaries, expert sessions, special announcements, networking sessions, dialogues, onsite presentations, and inspirational talks, the event sparked vibrant conversations on the state of sustainable finance in 2023, including the latest innovations, success stories, investable projects, and much more.

About this session

As one of the world’s earliest advocates for sustainable finance, Mark Burrows has seen it all. After a distinguished global career in investment banking, Mark became an advocate for sustainability in the private sector, taking on senior advisory roles with UNEP, UNDP, The Green Finance Initiative London, G20 Sustainability Group, and now the Asian Board of the Nature Conservancy. Here is his story.

GLF Climate: Frontiers of Change

Hosted on the sidelines of COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and online, GLF Climate 2022: Frontiers of Changeunited 7,000 participants from 164 countries and rallied over 27 million people on social media around what humanity can still do to avoid the worsening impacts of the climate crisis.

Featuring 228 leading scientists, activists, Indigenous leaders, financiers, youth and government leaders, and 96 incredible partner organizations, the second edition of GLF Climate called for a just transition to a stewardship economy that puts people and nature first.

Launching the new TreesAdapt partnership platform

TreesAdapt is CIFOR-ICRAF’s response with partners to the huge demand for climate change adaptation. It aims to be a one-stop for solutions on how to leverage forests, trees, and agroforestry to adapt agriculture, land, and people and to support countries and actors in cross-sectoral implementation.

Forests and tree-based systems are key to food security for millions of smallholders. Trees make farming and food systems more resilient, limiting the impact of heat waves. Trees create better microclimates and help better manage water from plot to landscape, limiting the impact of flooding and erosion. Forests and trees can support the resilience of sectors like energy and water.

Why is tree diversity crucial for food production systems?

Tree diversity is crucial for the resilience of food production systems in the face of global change, which includes increasing human populations, declining agricultural productivity, climate change, extremes, and invasive species.

This launchpad explores a new report, Conserving and using tree diversity for global climate change adaptation and food system resilience, by Lex A. J. Thomson, on how tree diversity can most effectively be conserved and used for smallholder livelihoods and food security in the face of a changing climate, and the role of collections-based research and development organizations in supporting these solutions.

Highlights

  • The global food system is failing to deliver sufficient and nutritious food to all while damaging the earth and unsustainably drawing down its resources. Trees and forests are essential to solving these challenges of achieving better healthy diets and environmental sustainability.
  • Trees and forests provide nutrient-rich foods, incomes for food security, ecosystem services for food production, and add resilience to food systems. At the same time, trees and forests protect biodiversity and mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration.
  • The authors recommend four approaches to realize the full potential of trees and forests to contribute to healthy and sustainable food systems: scaling up current tree-based food production, reorientating some agricultural investments and production incentives from the support of nutrient-poor foods to support, and integrating nutrition objectives into forest conservation and restoration programs.

10 Reasons why trees and forests are crucial for transforming the food system

Trees and forests have important roles to play in the transformation of our food systems:

  1. More than half of all human-consumed fruits and all nuts grow on trees.
  2. A large variety of nutrient-rich edible wild foods comes from forests.
  3. Many wild animals that provide meat for food-insecure rural communities depend on forests for their habitats.
  4. Human access to dairy and meat can be enhanced by the livestock fodder provided by forests and trees.
  5. Nutritional security can be achieved through combinations of micronutrient-rich tree foods on farms.
  6. Seasonal food gaps are mitigated by access to foods.
  7. A large portion of global food crops is pollinated by bees, insects, and other animals that depend on forests for nesting and foraging.
  8. Crop yields can be boosted with trees due to their ability to regulate microclimate, prevent soil erosion, regulate pests, and increase water availability.
  9. Trees on farms could stop and reverse the trend of land degradation and declining yields by protecting and restoring soil quality.
  10. Households with access to tree-based production systems are less vulnerable to weather shocks and more resilient to climate change.

The world has experienced severe land degradation due to deforestation, climate change, drought, desertification and unsustainable land use. Consequently, the productivity and health of farmlands, grazing lands and forests has declined at scale, jeopardizing the food security, health and livelihoods of the communities that depend on them.

This white paper provides a deep-dive into Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), a technical practice and community-led development approach that involves empowering local communities to restore their landscapes through the systematic regrowth and management of existing trees and shrubs from tree stumps, sprouting root systems and wild seeds. This paper summarizes the FMNR framework, provides a robust overview of its benefits, and includes a practical case study of its application in Niger.

This subject is part of GLF Africa: Restoring Africa’s Drylands.
