Restoring Landscapes to Sustainably Feed the Planet

Food production drives climate change, deforestation, pollution, and biodiversity loss, contributing a third of global emissions. Unsustainable practices threaten key commodities like coffee, cocoa, and soy, worsening environmental degradation and rural poverty.

The FOLUR Impact Program, funded by the Global Environment Facility and led by the World Bank, reforms food systems and restores landscapes. Active in 27 countries since 2021, FOLUR promotes participatory approaches, involving local communities and Indigenous Peoples in resource management. The program uses tools like the Participatory Informed Landscape Approach (PILA) to connect projects with global knowledge and align with international regulations.

FOLUR aims for sustainable value chains by 2050, balancing high yields with conservation, and addressing the significant costs of food system inefficiencies estimated at $12.7 trillion by the FAO.

GLF Amazonia 2021: As it happened

On 21–23 September 2021, the GLF Amazonia digital conference put forth one clear message: the protection of the Amazon is crucial for the survival of people and ecosystems globally. Titled “The Tipping Point – Solutions from the Inside Out,” the event featured the foremost scientists conducting researching the Amazon’s dieback, Indigenous leaders sharing the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic, the latest satellite technology developers monitoring the biome, young people who will continue some of the world’s most ancient cultures and traditions, political leaders shaping the region’s policy, and new partnerships aimed at achieving environmental sustainability and secure rights for Amazonian peoples. Sessions, plenaries and launches were viewed more that 15,000 times, and key messages reached 27 million on social media.

How women are restoring Amazonia

Women in Amazonia face a variety of barriers, but when given the opportunity, they can be strong leaders in conservation and sustainable development, says Deborah Delgado Pugley, associate professor and researcher at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP).

Over the last half century, agricultural intensification has accelerated rapidly, enabling the production of sufficient quantities of cereal crops to feed billions of people across the globe. There is little doubt that this is an important part of the reason why there is a smaller percentage of people who are hungry than ever before in modern history. But while more people now have access to adequate calories, the quality of diets has not been improving at the same rate and, in many cases, has actually deteriorated. Despite advances in the production of staple crops, there remain around 800 million people in the world who do not consume enough calories, 2 billion people globally who suffer from micronutrient deficiencies and 2 billion adults who are overweight or obese.

Though the number of people suffering from poor quality diets outnumbers the number suffering from lack of food, narratives addressing food security and agriculture are still dominated by productionist paradigms focused on producing more staple crops and calories, albeit with increasing attention to doing so sustainably. In this paper, we argue that a narrow focus on intensification of staple crop production in agricultural and food security policy may lead to unintended negative consequences for the dietary quality of millions of rural communities. We advocate for broadening the focus of agricultural policies and funding to take into account dietary diversity and quality.

Highlights:

  • Many food security experts have been calling for agricultural intensification in developing countries to feed a growing global population
  • This narrative is based on a narrow view of food security focused on calories and neglects issues of dietary quality
  • Encouraging small farmers across the developing world to grow more staple crops more intensively may have unintended negative consequences on dietary quality
  • A more nuanced approach sensitive to local contexts and appreciative of foods other than staples may lead to alternative policy choices in many places
