Primary tropical forests are vital for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Climate Agreement, and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, especially benefiting host countries and Indigenous People and Local Communities (IPLCs). The One Forest Summit in Libreville, co-hosted by France and Gabon, aimed to ensure these ecosystems are protected and restored for their environmental, economic, cultural, and social benefits.

This report assesses the state of biodiversity finance and recommends new financial mechanisms, focusing on biodiversity-positive carbon credits and nature certificates. It was developed by a High-Level Working Group with support from an Expert Panel.

Key Messages

1. Financial gap: global biodiversity financing needs to increase to $200 billion annually by 2030, while reducing harmful subsidies by $500 billion per year.
2. Innovative instruments: biodiversity-positive carbon credits and nature certificates can help bridge the financing gap and generate private sector interest.
3. Governance and policy: effective governance, clear policies, and institutional frameworks are crucial for market integrity and scaling up finance.
4. IPLC involvement: full participation and benefit-sharing with IPLCs are essential for successful stewardship of forests and biodiversity.
5. Market development: practical metrics, robust verification processes, and demand incentives are needed to develop high-integrity markets.

About this report

This report summarizes findings and recommendations from a 15-month study initiated to advance understanding of the use of landscape and jurisdictional approaches as a key corporate strategy for downstream and midstream companies to achieve sustainable sourcing and have positive impacts in the regions they are sourcing from.

The study identified 113 companies supporting landscape and jurisdictional initiatives across 91 initiatives, in 19 countries. Recommendations have been drawn from the research for downstream and midstream companies to mobilize more private sector action.

Key recommendations for companies

  • Increase landscape-scale action and integrate it into corporate sustainability and business strategy
  • Invite and/or incentivize other private sector actors to take landscape-scale action
  • Spotlight multi-stakeholder collaboration to transition towards sustainable land use at scale
  • Align resources and efforts in committed and/or progressing landscape and jurisdictions.

The report contains three further recommendations for the wider community working with landscape and jurisdictional approaches. Using the results from the research, a business case is presented in the report for companies to see the opportunities and assist the transformation to sustainable commodity production through multi-stakeholder collaboration at scale.

This report is part of a global study that aims to understand how midstream and downstream companies have been using landscape and jurisdictional approaches to address commodity-driven deforestation. The study includes five commodity specific reports on cocoa, palm oil, pulp, paper and packaging, beef and soy landscape-scale action as well as this final summary report. The study also delves deeper into other possible uses of these approaches, in a report on meeting corporate climate, nature and people goals.

A number of global trends, such as concurrent rises in incomes and urbanization, are driving the increased consumption of meat, dairy, and biofuels. Meeting the demand for products will require considerable increases in global production, particularly in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, where smallholder farming predominates and yields remain low. At the same time, it will be essential to promote improved food quality, to reduce negative impacts on health, while additional initiatives must address how to reduce food losses. Climate change is bringing further stressors. These challenges also present opportunities to help smallholder farmers boost their productivity by facilitating better access to inputs, technology, knowledge, financing, and markets. Agribusinesses are increasingly working with smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries to secure agricultural commodities, which help to boost rural incomes and economic growth. Smallholders also represent a growing market for farm inputs, information, and financial services.
Working with Smallholders: A Handbook for Firms Building Sustainable Supply Chains’ shows agribusinesses how to develop more sustainable, resilient, and productive supply chains and the substantial impact of doing so on development. The book compiles innovative solutions and cutting-edge ideas to meet the challenges, and illustrating these points through a variety of case studies from initiatives around the world.

About GLF Nairobi 2023: ‘A new Vision for Earth’

The GLF Nairobi 2023 Hybrid Conference, held on October 11 and 12, convened global thought leaders to set the stage for COP28, the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference. This pivotal event mobilised action on critical issues affecting humanity, biodiversity, and our planet.

The conference featured two focused days: Day 1 centered on “Africa’s Sovereign Solutions,” exploring pathways to a sustainable and prosperous future for the continent. Day 2, dedicated to climate, aimed to craft a “Survival Guide for a Planet in Crisis,” paving the way for a fairer world ahead of COP28.

GLF Nairobi brought together a diverse coalition of influential voices, ranging from scientists, activists, and Indigenous leaders to financiers, women, youth, policymakers, and private sector representatives. As a united front, we collectively championed change and passionately advocated for meaningful action in these pivotal times.

About this session

This session discusses how smallholder farmers can contribute to deforestation-free supply chains. Speakers from Malawi, Rwanda and Kenya will share their grassroots expertise, visuals, and perspectives on how to support smallholder farmers to leverage nature-based solutions on their farms and integrate them into profitable business models. They also examine tree nurseries as a restoration business model, as well as share practical examples and best practices they have developed at the community level.

What is a Nature-Positive Enterprise (NPE)?

NPE is defined by Fauna & Flora and Endangered Landscapes Programme grantees as financial viable business entity that sustainably derives value from natural and social capital in a land/seascape to attract and generate sustainable finance and positively contribute to nature conservation and restoration by ensuring local actors are equitably benefitted.

Landscape restoration projects often aim to facilitate the development of nature-positive economies by promoting sustainable land use and, in some cases providing training and facilitating enterprise development. However, while terms like ‘Conservation Enterprise’ and ‘Nature-Positive Enterprise’ (NPE) are widely used, there is little understandingof what makes them different from regular businesses.
While NPEs can enhance the value derived by local communities and landowners from existing cultural practices and traditional resource use, they are distinct from social-enterprise models.
This toolkit provides an array of assets for business design, and explores in-depth the unique facets of NPEs business models and principles:
  1. Sustainable use of natural capital – being at the heart of the business model.
  2. NPEs tend to be established in different markets/sectors, and contrasting geographies, such as rural/remote areas as opposed to urban areas, when compared to social enterprises; andNPEs are likely to have different scaling-up strategies and impact metrics.
  3. NPEs are likely to have different scaling-up strategies and impact metrics.
  4. NPEs in restoration projects tend to have further distinctions, such as the ability to convert increased natural capital from project activities into enterprise activities.

Case studies overview

The toolkit presents 9 initiatives that are promoting nature-positive economies and sustainable land use. Organisations from different geographies were chosen to provide actual case scenarios in restoration projects.

  1. Fundaţia Conservation Carpathia (FCC) – Romania
  2. Zarand Association (AZ) – Romania
  3. Fundatia ADEPT – Romania
  4. Akdeniz Koruma Dernegi – Turkey
  5. Ethio Wetlands and Natural Resources Association (EWNRA) – UK
  6. ProPark Foundation – Romania
  7. Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds – Bulgaria
  8. Madagascar Baobab Enterprise – Madagascar
  9. Istituto Oikos – Lebanon
