On 30 March, the Luxembourg-GLF Finance for Nature platform explored why humanity must scale up investments in nature-based solutions (NbS) to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss.

This digital forum convened practitioners, policymakers and scientists to explore opportunities for NbS investments emerging from recent developments in carbon finance and sustainable finance regulations, build dialogue to increase the adoption of good practices, and inform policy processes in this arena.

Mainstreaming finance for nature – from niche to norm

The Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) held its sixth Investment Case Symposium, GLF-Luxembourg Finance for Nature: What comes next?, on 7 March 2023 in Luxembourg and online.

It brought together over 4,500 finance stakeholders from across the globe; project developers, entrepreneurs, and fund managers; development finance institutions, impact investors, donors, and foundations; investors, funds, banks, and other financiers; and youth, local communities, and changemakers.

The symposium showcased existing and innovative financial mechanisms, investable community-led business models, and successful climate investments. It connected local project developers – especially in the Global South – with investors; highlighted how to catalyze private sector investment in community-led and nature-based projects; and identified policy recommendations for moving green finance from the margins to the mainstream.

Key messages

The donor and partner report focuses on blending different types of capital, setting standards, redirecting subsidies, and promoting innovation to achieve sustainability in finance, particularly in nature-based solutions and green commodity value chains:

  1. Blended Finance: Leverage public and philanthropic capital to attract private investment for nature-based solutions through ongoing stakeholder dialogue.
  2. Impact Monitoring and Standards: Establish clear sustainability standards and support compliance through tailored indicators for green commodity value chains.
  3. Sustainable Value Chains: Redirect agriculture subsidies to sustainable projects and enforce regulations for transparency, traceability, sustainability, and human rights in commodity supply chains.
  4. Innovations for Community Finance: Invest in human capital at the landscape level, create innovative financing mechanisms for forest restoration, and integrate just transition principles into financial systems.

About GLF Climate 2021

From 5–7 November 2021, on the sidelines of the 26th session of the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 26), GLF Climate: Forests, Food, Finance – Frontiers of Change sparked a global discussion on exactly this question.

The message is clear: the health of people and the planet requires collective actions, individual behavioral changes, and enabling and enforcing government policies and investments that put nature and people first.

The GLF Climate has racked up a record over 1 million views—and counting—from over 140 countries, reached more than 42 million people on social media, and provided a crucial platform for 400 speakers – of which 50 percent were women.

Mobilizing green finance

This session highlights how blending finance from different sources (results-based climate finance, grants, loans, public resources and private investments) enables the integrated cross-sectoral approaches needed to deliver such programs and address sustainable landscape management issues at scale. It features programs such as innovative Emissions Reduction Programs (ERPs) that are now disbursing results-based payments, growing interest in financing for nature-based solutions, initiatives to green finance, and the potential to repurpose significant public funding and incentives through subsidy reform. The session will also highlight initial findings from the Financial Task Force for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
