A number of global trends, such as concurrent rises in incomes and urbanization, are driving the increased consumption of meat, dairy, and biofuels. Meeting the demand for products will require considerable increases in global production, particularly in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, where smallholder farming predominates and yields remain low. At the same time, it will be essential to promote improved food quality, to reduce negative impacts on health, while additional initiatives must address how to reduce food losses. Climate change is bringing further stressors. These challenges also present opportunities to help smallholder farmers boost their productivity by facilitating better access to inputs, technology, knowledge, financing, and markets. Agribusinesses are increasingly working with smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries to secure agricultural commodities, which help to boost rural incomes and economic growth. Smallholders also represent a growing market for farm inputs, information, and financial services.
Working with Smallholders: A Handbook for Firms Building Sustainable Supply Chains’ shows agribusinesses how to develop more sustainable, resilient, and productive supply chains and the substantial impact of doing so on development. The book compiles innovative solutions and cutting-edge ideas to meet the challenges, and illustrating these points through a variety of case studies from initiatives around the world.

The GLF Nairobi 2023 Hybrid Conference, held on October 11 and 12, convened global thought leaders to set the stage for COP28, the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference. This pivotal event mobilised action on critical issues affecting humanity, biodiversity, and our planet.

The conference featured two focused days: Day 1 centered on “Africa’s Sovereign Solutions,” exploring pathways to a sustainable and prosperous future for the continent. Day 2, dedicated to climate, aimed to craft a “Survival Guide for a Planet in Crisis,” paving the way for a fairer world ahead of COP28.

GLF Nairobi brought together a diverse coalition of influential voices, ranging from scientists, activists, and Indigenous leaders to financiers, women, youth, policymakers, and private sector representatives. As a united front, we collectively championed change and passionately advocated for meaningful action in these pivotal times.

Nurturing tradition, sustaining vives

This film tells the story of rattan harvesting in the village of Lelekaa, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, where communities have been involved in this tradition for decades. Although rattan is abundant, there are numerous challenges involved in producing high-quality rattan-based products and maintaining competitive prices. Government assistance and training can be a solution.

The film also shows how rattan has benefited the people of Lelekaa, helping them educate their children and an important source of income. This is a brief story about the beauty of nature and how the people of Lelekaa live closely with rattan.

About this session

The session showcased the CompensACTION initiative, which was launched under the German G7 presidency in 2022 and aims to give agricultural producers adequate compensation for their work. It especially seeks to help smallholders in developing countries earn a living income by selling their produce and being paid for the ecosystem services they provide.

The session presents evidence from pilot projects, share experiences from partners on payment for ecosystem services schemes, and showcase opportunities for new partnerships. Experts covered financing and incentives for low emissions development. The session also addressed challenges faced by people with disabilities in project implementation and highlighted the importance of inclusivity and support for vulnerable groups.

About this session

The African continent produces less than 3% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, yet it is already bearing the brunt of the climate crisis, including floods, droughts, and unpredictable rainfall. But the continent faces a hefty bill to prepare itself for a hotter future.

At COP26 in 2021, African leaders estimated they would need USD 1.3 trillion over the next 20 years to deal with climate-related challenges. Initiatives like the Loss and Damage Fund were established to bolster climate resilience.

The meeting addressed the underfunding of climate adaptation in Africa and emphasized the need to allocate funds for smallholder farmers and women. It highlighted capacity building, blended finance, and successful case studies promoting resilience. Government-led projects in Ethiopia and Kenya were discussed, focusing on reforestation and sustainable agriculture. The Loss and Damage Fund’s eligibility criteria and mechanisms were considered, emphasizing adaptive capacity.

About this session

Sub-Saharan Africa is disproportionately affected by desertification, land degradation, and drought. The continent’s drylands urgently need to be restored to help communities adapt to the climate crisis and build resilient and sustainable food systems.

Small-scale farmers, women, youth and Indigenous Peoples are the most vulnerable to the impacts of unsustainable land use practices. However, they can play a crucial role in restoring if granted secure land tenure rights.

This session highlights the importance of tenure security to restoring landscapes, protecting biodiversity, and shielding livelihoods from the effects of the climate crisis.

About this session

This session explored strategies for meeting the challenges posed by the EU Regulation on Deforestation-free Products to “avoid that the listed products Europeans buy, use and consume contribute to deforestation and forest degradation in the EU and globally”.

Panelists discussed how to put smallholder farmers, including women and Indigenous Peoples, at the center of this transition. Learn about key actions that must be taken to comply with the new regulations, potential challenges and stumbling blocks that may be specific to Africa’s context, and mechanisms or levers to engage with smallholder farmers.

Strengthening genebanks in Sub-Saharan Africa

Farmers in sub-Saharan Africa face the combined threats of climate change, degraded agricultural lands and a growing population. They will need more resilient, productive and nutritious crops to meet these challenges. Unfortunately, crop diversity—which offers the raw materials for crop innovation—is being lost at unprecedented rates.

Equally concerning is that the collections of seeds currently held in the participating national genebanks are also at grave risk. For years, the genebanks have suffered from insufficient staffing and low levels of funding.

The Seeds for Resilience project is providing the financial and technical support to ensure these five national genebanks will reach the necessary international standards to ensure their collections will be safe and widely available, long term.

Asking farmers what they need

Evaluation of the diversity in the genebanks. Seeds for Resilience supports the partner genebanks in working with diverse groups of farmers to evaluate their collections and identify the samples that have the characteristics the farm- ers are looking for. Often, women prioritize nutrition and taste, whereas men seek the varieties that give the highest groups are heard.

This participatory approach engages a wide range of stakeholders, from farmers and plant breeders all the way to the consumers who generate the demand for farmers’ produce, and has proven to be successful in generating new crop varieties that are rapidly taken up by farmers and truly have an impact.
