Peatlands cover 3-4% of Earth’s land but store a third of global soil carbon. Despite their importance, 12% are degraded, contributing 4% of human-induced emissions.

Degradation, driven by agriculture and forestry, causes environmental and social issues like fires and economic damage. Managing peatlands effectively requires collaboration across sectors.

The Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) Peatlands 2024 Hybrid Conference brought together global stakeholders to address gaps in peatland science, policy, and practice. Held alongside the UNFCCC Bonn Climate Change Conference, it explored peatlands’ roles in carbon storage, biodiversity, and water regulation.

Home to approximately 40 percent of the world’s species and more than a quarter of the world’s forests, Latin America is a biodiversity powerhouse. But multiple drivers, the majority human, are exerting profound and unmitigated pressure on the region’s ecosystems and wildlife. In this session, experts build on the ‘Financing Diversity’ plenary, shedding light on the potential that sustainable finance could have in restoring both ecosystems and supply chain equity in the Amazon basin, while exploring the initiatives, instruments and innovations needed to bring an inclusive and rights-based bioeconomy to scale.

This session will take the audience on a journey to three parts of the world – Central Asia, Africa and Latin America – in order to hear the stories of pastoralists and others living there. The challenges that these people face will be discussed together with the different innovations that are being developed to overcome them and harness the productivities of drylands and rangelands for local and national economies, food production, and biodiversity conservation. The dearth of good data on rangelands and drylands will be highlighted, and a pathway mapped out for drawing sufficient attention to and investment in rangelands and drylands through the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration.

Participative landscape governance: a basic condition for sustainable landscape management and restoration in Latin America and the Caribbean

This session provides insights into work in Latin America and the Caribbean aimed at promoting participative landscape governance in sustainable landscape management and restoration projects. Participative landscape governance aims to ensure a central role for stakeholders in work to change the world’s environmental and developmental trajectories.

Participants at the session reviewed examples that underline the global and local inputs of various stakeholders, and their complementary actions in defining and implementing locally and globally-defined initiatives and approaches for forest landscape restoration, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable forest management.
