This is the first in a 4-part series titled, Webinars on Land-based Jobs for the Youth. These are topical webinars that address the practical challenges that young job-seekers face. However, each Webinar will air at the time most convenient for young people in each region to participate: Africa (November), Latin America and the Caribbean (February), and Asia (April) can participate. The Webinars will also draw primarily on examples from the respective region. The concluding global webinar is planned for 12 August 2021 in celebration of the International Youth Day.

BONN, Germany (20 June 2019) — A newly enhanced Web portal features a massive amount of data on forests, trees and agroforestry, putting it at the fingertips of scientists, civil society, governments, extension agents, farmers and foresters and the general public.

The CGIAR Forests, Trees and Agroforestry website has been revamped to include 5,000 publications, more than 200 datasets and 74 spatial data maps. Users will be able to easily search for resources in the publications section and on the new data portal.

To be launched at the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) in Bonn, Germany on Sunday, 23 June 2019, scientists will demonstrate the latest innovations and digital resources related to CGIAR FTA research and their practical application. FTA enhances the role of forests, trees and agroforestry in sustainable development, food security and in addressing climate change.

“We are a research for development program. Which means that the knowledge we produce is not only for researchers, it is for stakeholders and decision makers at all levels from local to national governments. We have redesigned the website with this in mind,” said Vincent Gitz, FTA director at the Center for International Forestry Research.

“Access to our research and data is part of our commitment to enhance the contribution of forests, trees and agroforestry to sustainable development, and the tools and digital resources available on the website offer opportunities for greater knowledge dissemination and collaboration.”

The theme of GLF Bonn 2019 is on rights and climate change, including Indigenous rights, women’s rights, youth and local communities. More than 1,500 leaders from 100 countries will attend the conference, including Indigenous peoples, ministers, scientists, finance heads, global media, youth and more. Thousands more will follow online.

Promoting a rights-based approach to landscape management will be vital to indigenous groups, youth, women, and local communities, tied to landscape resources determining their own futures.

Together with experts and mentors, 40 outstanding young people will participate in their own workshop before GLF Bonn 2019 on June 20th and 21st to co-create understanding of the intersection of rights and landscapes. Such an understanding can empower young people to create rights literate communities.

This two day workshop, entitled “A Just Future – Social Justice in a Changing Climate” and led by the Youth in Landscapes Initiative (YIL), has a packed agenda that includes exercises, expert exchange, group work, mentor networking, and more.

By engaging in the workshop, participants will:

• Learn about key rights-related issues and current global solutions
• Understand how climate change affects rights of communities
• Learn how to adopt a rights-based approach to their work
• Expand their network, meeting professionals from all over the world
• Collaborate with existing youth organizations, programs and initiatives

Equipped with the rights savvy and tools necessary to bring rights based approaches to their work, these future champions will play a central role in the, in which participants will weigh in with experts on the right to a future. This plenary is expected to serve as a platform for the intergenerational dialogue necessary to create transformative change in sustainable development. You can read more about the plenary here.

Over the past year and a half, I’ve been able to better understand what it means to be challenged. I first became Youth Coordinator in a time of transition and great opportunity. The GLF was entering a new five-year phase while the Youth in Landscapes Initiative was working out the details of a formal partnership.

It is difficult to maintain the energy, legitimacy and core values of an organic youth movement while building partnerships but thanks to the YIL leadership and Steering Committee – YIL has grown in record numbers. This all-inclusive initiative, created by youth for youth, has shaken the coconut in Rome, crafted a restoration community in Nairobi and challenged landscape leaders in Bonn.

As I step away from the role of Youth Coordinator and into the GLF Knowledge and Learning team, I want to reflect on our incredible power.

We – the collective youth community – create magic together. Whether it’s online discussions, new friendships or workshops, these opportunities create magic and new knowledge for positive change. I hope that we never forget our responsibility. That we must take decisive action towards the dreams that scare us the most. We don’t have the luxury of making friends with fear or hesitancy. Our time is short.

This month, I encourage us to embrace the challenges we face in our life head on. And when you feel you have accomplished a challenge, take some time to celebrate, and then…begin chasing the next.
